Things you didn’t know about wet pour…
Wet pour rubber is a porous system that is mixed on site and poured into place to form a continuous bound together rubber surface that is safe and durable. This makes it suitable for it to be laid around complex play equipment, in fact this wet pour system is so versatile it can be used in many different areas including:
• Playground safety surfaces
• Leisure or children's indoor climbing centres
• Leisure and sports surfaces
• Swimming pool surrounds
• Spa & hot tubs
• Golfwalk ways
• Domestic pathways and patios
• Multi-use games arena
Spongy Safety Surfaces recently completed a big job were they laid wet pour rubber for this use, click here to find out how it went on.
So what facts…did you not know about wet pour…
1. Wet pour has a long life spam, saving money down the line; all Spongy Safety Surfaces come with a five-year guarantee.
2. Wet pour is continuous, keeping it free of seams or joints.
3. Wet pour systems cure rapidly, after mixing; this is why we have to mix system on-site near the play area.
4. CFH stands for Critical Fall Height this is the maximum height of fall from the play equipment onto the ground or impact absorbing wet pour surface.
5. Some coloured rubbers are more sensitive to ultra violet degradation than others, so please ask Spongy Surfaces about this on 0161 973 0010.
6. Removal of pollution or leaves should be the only maintenance necessary annually and this can be effected by power washing or the application of a washing detergent, so it has to be done right so not to effect the surface. Spongy Surfaces can offer a maintenance service see out website for more…www.spongysurfaces.com
7. EPDM – stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, which is synthetically manufactured rubber, formed in sheets and then cut into granules of varying sizes.
8. VIRGIN EPDM – is a term used to emphasise that the granules are not recycled SBR.
9. SBR - Styrene-butadiene rubber, which are former tyres is environmentally friendly, as it is recycling, rubber from tyres and re-using them for black base in the surface.
10. Wet pour can be laid on almost any surface but if no hard base exists then excavation to reduce levels is required and a minimum 150mm depth of MOT type 1 stone is be provided as a foundation.

Safety must come first….but keep the element of play in playground…
How to make a playground safe.
Safety is the biggest issue that should concern any playground safety surface installer, ok so if it looks aesthetically beautiful this can add value to the play project, but safety and fun should be top of the list….
Did you know…
• A playground can be made safer by reducing the maximum fall height of equipment an example of this would be a tall slide.
• Better design of play equipment and were it is placed can increase safety.
• A wet pour safety surface can be installed in a variety of thicknesses according to the max free fall height.
• Wet pour can be laid around complex playground equipment.
• A wet pour safety surface overall depth is dependant on the playground equipment, as it is the critical fall height that dictates the final depth.
• A fun safe playground can help the promotion of play that can improve children’s health and well-being.
Spongy Surfaces can provide all kinds of safety surfaces including wet pour safety surfaces, safety grass mats and artificial grass mats, see our website for details..www.spongysurfaces.com
More than 38,000 children are injured seriously enough on UK playgrounds each year to have to go to hospital. RoSPA carries out hundreds of playground inspections annually, but believes there is a growing need for local authorities and landowners to be more aware of safety issues at other places where children play, but which are not necessarily authorised playgrounds.
“Play should be about children having fun and learning to manage risk through adventurous activity. This is an essential part of child development and important to the future health of the nation.”

Ten reason's why a wetpour surface could benefit all ages and abilities!

"Every year there are 40,000 injuries to children on playgrounds" Fact from RoSPA - The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
Wetpour rubber is installed to make playground areas suitable and safe for all people of all ages and all abilities, so not only can it be used in playgrounds for the able bodied people and children but also for those with disabilities old and young!
“Research shows that there are considerable benefits to elderly people if they have the opportunity of using play equipment”.
“You don’t stop playing because you get old. You get old because you stop playing”
RoSPA
Spongy Surfaces Ltd recently under took a project with this in mind, when they installed a wetpour rubber surface in a hospital courtyard, the courtyard was a place for the elderly to sit in the fresh air for afternoon's in the sun, with the knowledge that if they fell or slipped their fall would be cushioned from this impact absorbing surface.
How wetpour rubber works - Wetpour rubber works by forming an impact-absorbing surface mixed together with a polyurethane binder and poured in place onto a prepared base to form this continuous surface that can be adapted to meet the safety requirements!
So here goes ...your ten reason's why a wetpour surface could benefit all ages and abilities!
1). Continuous & strong structure - wetpour has a long life expectancy and can sustain play from all people and ages!
2). Slip-resistant and porous - because of its structure wetpour rubber is porous, letting water run through, this helps to keep the surface from retaining the water and making it more slip-resistant.
3). Complies with all safety surface regulations at industry standards.
4). It is hygienic because it can be rinsed down with water and the surface is always visible, as sometimes bark can be deceiving in the fact that objects can be hidden in this surface, making it dangerous.
5). Virtually maintenance free, once its laid that's it, just a wash down from time to time and nothing else!
6). Fun and educational, the use of incorporating numbers, letters, games, and logo’s into the surface can help make the surface a tool to help stimulate the brain. Bright colours can help activity in the brain for both the young and old.
7). Available in lots of colours, a wetpour surface doesn't have to be black or plain it can be mixed or brightly coloured.
8). This material is not just for outdoor areas, it be can be laid around complex equipment in both outdoor and indoor areas.
9). Rubber wetpour designs are permanent once laid they are here to stay!
10). Suitable for different sports surfaces, (tennis, netball, volleyball, football, basketball and hockey).

How to make playgrounds safer and recycle!
Recycling is important and it's true people are becoming more aware of what we can be doing to save our environment and save money. I used to have one rubbish bin, now in 2008 I have bin for everything from paper to plastic bottles. It's true as well, if I don't use these bins I feel guilty and have to stop myself from being lazy and put it in the correct recycling bin!
So how can we take this into our playgrounds, save money and save the environment?
Easy - use a safety surface thats recycled. Spongy Surfaces use recycled rubber made from recycling tryes, which are free of metal stones and fabric, mixed together with binders this can form a basis for a safety surface called SBR.
By recyling these tyres it stops the tyres going to landfills as we are putting it back into life system. The more awareness we can bring to these types of projects the better, as its the children playing in these playgrounds that will benefit from there environment later on in life and over generations the awareness will start to have an effect on everyone. Who would of thought 5 years ago, I would have so many bins...times are changing and if we can all make a small difference it will eventually make a big difference.
So it is true playgrounds are becoming a safer place and better for the environment!
Check out our website to see these recycled tyres in action...at www.spongysurfaces.com
