Things you didn’t know about wet pour…

Wet pour rubber is a porous system that is mixed on site and poured into place to form a continuous bound together rubber surface that is safe and durable. This makes it suitable for it to be laid around complex play equipment, in fact this wet pour system is so versatile it can be used in many different areas including:

• Playground safety surfaces
• Leisure or children's indoor climbing centres
• Leisure and sports surfaces
• Swimming pool surrounds
• Spa & hot tubs
• Golfwalk ways
• Domestic pathways and patios
• Multi-use games arena

Spongy Safety Surfaces recently completed a big job were they laid wet pour rubber for this use, click here to find out how it went on.

So what facts…did you not know about wet pour…

1. Wet pour has a long life spam, saving money down the line; all Spongy Safety Surfaces come with a five-year guarantee.
2. Wet pour is continuous, keeping it free of seams or joints.
3. Wet pour systems cure rapidly, after mixing; this is why we have to mix system on-site near the play area.
4. CFH stands for Critical Fall Height this is the maximum height of fall from the play equipment onto the ground or impact absorbing wet pour surface.
5. Some coloured rubbers are more sensitive to ultra violet degradation than others, so please ask Spongy Surfaces about this on 0161 973 0010.
6. Removal of pollution or leaves should be the only maintenance necessary annually and this can be effected by power washing or the application of a washing detergent, so it has to be done right so not to effect the surface. Spongy Surfaces can offer a maintenance service see out website for more…www.spongysurfaces.com
7. EPDM – stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, which is synthetically manufactured rubber, formed in sheets and then cut into granules of varying sizes.
8. VIRGIN EPDM – is a term used to emphasise that the granules are not recycled SBR.
9. SBR - Styrene-butadiene rubber, which are former tyres is environmentally friendly, as it is recycling, rubber from tyres and re-using them for black base in the surface.
10. Wet pour can be laid on almost any surface but if no hard base exists then excavation to reduce levels is required and a minimum 150mm depth of MOT type 1 stone is be provided as a foundation.

Safety must come first….but keep the element of play in playground…

How to make a playground safe.

Safety is the biggest issue that should concern any playground safety surface installer, ok so if it looks aesthetically beautiful this can add value to the play project, but safety and fun should be top of the list….

Did you know…

• A playground can be made safer by reducing the maximum fall height of equipment an example of this would be a tall slide.

• Better design of play equipment and were it is placed can increase safety.

• A wet pour safety surface can be installed in a variety of thicknesses according to the max free fall height.

• Wet pour can be laid around complex playground equipment.

• A wet pour safety surface overall depth is dependant on the playground equipment, as it is the critical fall height that dictates the final depth.

• A fun safe playground can help the promotion of play that can improve children’s health and well-being.

Spongy Surfaces can provide all kinds of safety surfaces including wet pour safety surfaces, safety grass mats and artificial grass mats, see our website for details..www.spongysurfaces.com

More than 38,000 children are injured seriously enough on UK playgrounds each year to have to go to hospital. RoSPA carries out hundreds of playground inspections annually, but believes there is a growing need for local authorities and landowners to be more aware of safety issues at other places where children play, but which are not necessarily authorised playgrounds.

“Play should be about children having fun and learning to manage risk through adventurous activity. This is an essential part of child development and important to the future health of the nation.”
